About Fostering Agencies in the West Midlands

The West Midlands is the UK's second-largest metropolitan area, home to more than 2.9 million people across seven boroughs: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Solihull. Fostering agencies operating across the West Midlands recruit, train and support foster carers who can provide a safe and nurturing home for children in care. There are two main types of fostering provider in the West Midlands and both are regulated and inspected by Ofsted.

Local authority fostering services

Each West Midlands borough has its own local authority fostering team — for example, Birmingham City Council, Coventry City Council or Wolverhampton City Council. These services focus on finding carers for children already looked after by that council, and are often the starting point for people who want to foster locally within their borough.

Independent fostering agencies (IFAs)

Privately run organisations — sometimes charities or social enterprises — that are commissioned by councils when they need additional placements. IFAs working in the West Midlands often recruit carers across the whole region and beyond, and can sometimes offer higher allowances or more specialist support for children with complex needs.
