What does an Outstanding Ofsted rating mean?
An "Outstanding" grade is Ofsted's highest rating, showing an agency meets exceptional standards across the board. Source: Ofsted While it's a great baseline to narrow your search, you shouldn't limit yourself to Outstanding agencies alone. Inspections only happen every few years, so an older report won't reflect recent staff turnover, shifting caseloads, or changes in leadership. Crucially, a high-level grade can't tell you how close your local social worker is, how responsive their 24/7 support line actually is, or if the team feels like a good fit for your family. Use the rating as a helpful guide, but prioritise the practical, local support that shapes your day-to-day experience.
Ofsted rating isn't the whole picture
An Outstanding rating tells you Ofsted found excellent practice at that agency. It doesn't tell you everything about what day-to-day support will actually feel like for you and the child. Before you get in touch, it's worth checking these six things too.
How close is their nearest office?
Ofsted rates the agency, not the branch. A national agency's Outstanding rating might sit hundreds of miles from you. Check they actually have someone local who can visit you and the child face to face.
How quickly do they respond, day or night?
Ask how fast they typically respond to a new enquiry, and what support looks like at 2am during a crisis. A good Ofsted rating doesn't guarantee someone picks up the phone when you need them most.
Is there a local support network?
Look for regular local meet-ups, a buddy system with experienced carers, or support groups near you, not just an online forum. Carers who feel connected locally tend to stay in it for longer.
How do they support your own family?
Fostering affects your whole household, not just the child placed with you. Ask what support exists for your own children or partner, and how the agency helps you manage contact with the child's birth family.
How carefully do they match, train and give you a break?
A thoughtful matching process, proper training before and after approval, and genuine access to respite care all reduce the risk of a placement breaking down, for you and the child.
What's their track record with carers?
How long an agency has been running, whether experienced carers stay with them, and how fairly they handle a complaint or allegation against a carer say more about day-to-day reality than the ratings badge alone.
